Filing Homestead Exemption
To apply for homestead exemption, you must go to the Tax Assessor's Office in the County Administration Building, West Wing, in Hernando, MS, between January 2, 2006 and March 31, 2006 and bring the following:
1. A copy of your Recorded Warranty Deed (this document should have been mailed to you after recording your purchase)
2. Your Mississippi car/truck tag numbers.
3. Your Social Security number and spouse's if applicable.
4. Your Settlement statement from the closing.
If the home you purchased last year was new construction PLEASE read and apply this!
The property taxes you are currently paying into your escrow account each month is based on your lot only. Your tax bill for 2007 will come due in December. It will be higher than your current taxes because the tax bill will include the house. It is extremely important that you begin adding the proper amount to your monthly mortgage payment to cover your 2007 tax bill. If you don't, this will cause an escrow shortage and your payment would go up dramatically in 2008. To estimate your 2007 tax bill, go to the Desoto County Tax Assessor's website, www.desotoms.info.com. Click on Tax Assessor, the Tax Estimator. When asked for your appraised value, use 90% of the actual value to get the assessed value for your property. This is not exact, but a good estimate to use. Your monthly mortgage statement has a line for "Additional amount applied to escrow." Put the extra amount you are paying on this line. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at brad@desotohome.com
